Paris And The Dead
This might sound quite a morbid topic for a sightseeing website, but tourists in Paris often visit the city's cemeteries.
Pere Lachaise, in the east of Paris, tends to be the cemetery of choice for most sightseeers. It contains the graves of such luminaries as:
However, Paris contains two other cemeteries that are worth visiting.
The first, in the north of the city is the Cimetiere de Montmartre (metro Blanche) which includes Truffaut, Degas and Berlioz (to name just a few).
And, in the south of Paris there's the Cimetiere de Montparnasse which is the resting place of a number of left-bank intellectuals such as Sartre and Simone De Beauvoir.
Each cemetary is worth visiting but, unless you're staying in Paris for a long time, you're going to have to make a choice.
My own recommendation is that, unless you have a particular attachment to someone in Pere Lachaise, my advice would be to ignore the beaten track and take the metro down to Montparnasse.
