Buttes Chaumont - undiscovered Paris

The park at Buttes Chaumont is evidence that, for all the amazing tourist sites in Paris, the Parisians like to keep the best stuff for themselves.

Parc Buttes Chaumont

Buttes Chaumont is located in the north east of the city and is a man-made park with a lake and waterfall.

It dates back to the 1860s and was another creation of Baron Haussmann, Paris' famous town planner.

(Haussmann was also responsible for Parc Montsouris in the south of the city)

The best time to visit Buttes Chaumont is after 4pm in the afternoon when local students and families go to relax and play.

Make sure you climb to the top of the "butte" (see the photo above) and follow the park path until you find the grotto at the bottom of the waterfall.
