Horseracing In Paris

Longchamp (Hippodrome de Longchamp) is the most famous racecourse in France and one of the world's most famous race courses.

Based in the west of Paris (in the Bois de Boulogne), it stages many of the top horse races in France.

It's most famous as the venue for the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, held in early October each year. However, Longchamp also hosts the French 2,000 guineas and 1,000 guineas - called the "Poule d'Essai des Poulains" and "Poule d'Essai des Pouliches", respectively - and the Grand Prix de Paris.

Longchamp holds regular horse racing meetings from March to October/early November.

However, the best times to visit the race course are:

- The first weekend in October for the 2 day Prix De L'Arc de Triomphe race meeting.

- Mid-May for French guineas Sunday.

How to get to Longchamp

On big race days and Sundays, there are free buses to the course. These buses leave from the metro stop Porte d'Auteuil in south west Paris (next to Auteuil racecourse). Then, during the afternoon, buses return from the the car park at Longchamp to Auteuil.

On other days, one way to get to the course is to take the metro to La Defense - Grande Arche and then the tramway to Suresnes-Longchamp. Then walk downhill into the Bois de Boulogne and the course is only another 100 meters or so.

Longchamp is not just one racecourse, it's 4 different courses that are linked together.

The 1,000m races aren't run in front of the stands. They are run in the middle of the course.

Both Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas painted horse racing scenes at Longchamp.
